The purpose of the Big Ten Band Directors Foundation is to bring outstanding composers to the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, to commission musical compositions from major composers, and to contribute to the musical environment of the areas it serves.

The Big Ten Conference covers the greater part of the middle United States. The fourteen member schools are flagship schools in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Bands have rich tradition and history in these institutions, and they have been leaders in the fields of concert and athletic bands for generations.
